“Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.” (Psalm 73:23–24, ESV)
The author of Psalm 73 gave insight on his life. Asaph, the author, wrote that he had messed up his life badly. He “was stupid and ignorant” (Psalm 73:22). Asaph even confessed that he had acted “beastly” before God! And how did God respond? Asaph mentions in 73:23 that God “held his hand”. Patiently, God “guided” Asaph with heavenly counsel. Asaph even began to feel that his eternal life was still secure. God remained faithful, even though Asaph remained faithless. God patiently waited for Asaph to go through his beastly attitude and ignorant actions, waiting for the moment when Asaph would repent and return to holiness.
People are not as forgiving, graceful, and loving as our Lord God. People will hold a grudge for the rest of their life. People will reject someone who even begs for mercy. People will hold something against another even when nothing was done wrong. God, however, is the epitome of a loving Father.
In a parable found in Luke 15, Jesus described a father who had a prodigal son. The son messed up everything in his life. He deserted the family. He demanded his inheritance only to squander it on a sinful lifestyle (Luke 15:13). He made so many mistakes and sinned so thoroughly that he ended up eating slop with pigs (Luke 15:17). After a while, the son came to his senses and returned home. Expecting ridicule and harsh words, the son was approached by his father in a wholly different manner. When the son repented for all he had done, the father in the parable celebrated the son’s return, threw a party, embraced and kissed him. It was Jesus’ way of describing how God the Father celebrates the lost soul who finds his way back to repentance and faithfulness.
Psalm 139 explains how God is continually present in this world, watching over each soul, noticing the sins and the holiness displayed by every person….
“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” (Psalm 139:7–10)
God desires to lead you by hand, walk with you down the paths of life, and be present in your good and bad days. When the addict gives up drugs, God is there. When the sailor is alone in the raft on the sea, God is there. When you feel all alone, God is there.
“Elena sat at her kitchen table, the ticking of the wall clock the only sound in the dark. It was 2:00 AM. A few months ago, her life had been full—a bustling home, a demanding but fulfilling job, and plans for the future. Then, in a matter of weeks, everything unraveled. A corporate restructuring took her job, a sudden illness claimed her mother, and the silence that followed chased away the fair-weather friends she thought she could count on.
She felt invisible. She prayed, but her prayers seemed to bounce off the ceiling, dissolving into the quietness of her apartment. "God, are You even there?" she whispered into the darkness, tears tracing paths down her cheeks. The crushing realization of being completely on her own settled in her chest like lead.
Exhausted, she walked to her window and stared out at the sleeping neighborhood. The streetlights flickered against the damp pavement, casting long, lonely shadows. She felt exactly like the prophet Elijah in the desert—spent, dejected, and convinced she was the only one left facing the storm.
But as she focused on the quiet world outside, the overwhelming panic began to give way to a strange, inexplicable stillness. In her absolute weakest moment, the pretense of holding it all together vanished. She had nothing left to lean on but air—and it was there, in the emptiness, that she sensed an undeniable presence. It wasn't a booming voice, but a gentle, steady warmth that seemed to wrap around her. It was as if God were saying, “I have been here all along. You only needed to clear away the noise to hear Me.”
The next morning, Elena woke up with a quiet resolve. The circumstances of her life hadn't magically changed overnight, but the crushing sense of loneliness was gone. She realized that while she had been focusing on the silence, God had been anchoring her heart.
She began to notice the small mercies she had overlooked in her grief: the neighbor who dropped off groceries, the sunrise painting her living room in gold, and the peace that now guarded her mind. She understood that sometimes, God strips away our worldly supports to become our only support—not as a punishment, but to teach us the kind of faith that cannot be shaken.” (from “The Silent Valley” series).
If you ever feel isolated, lonely, lost, or low, remember that you are not truly alone. You have Jesus as your Savior. You have the Holy Spirit known in scripture as “The Comforter” (John 14:26). Your soul has been redeemed. God is the only counsel you need. Don’t isolate yourself from God. Don’t try to hide from God. Your salvation lies in the very presence of a loving Heavenly Father. He will reveal Himself in time. You just need to offer Him your right hand to steady your gait and secure your future.
A PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Oh Lord my God! You know my deepest desires. You have seen evidence of my faith or lack of it. You know my inner thoughts. You are fully aware of my tendencies. Help me, dear Lord, to keep You foremost in my heart. Let my thoughts not fall prey to bitterness and evil. Keep my feet rooted to the path that leads directly to Your Kingdom.
On good days, remind me to enjoy the blessings while praising Your graciousness. On bad days, keep my feet from straying toward dead ends. You are the one who redeemed me. You know what is best for me. Your ways lead to life, even eternal life.
I thank You for Jesus the Christ. He endured torments and the cross to save my soul. He battled darkness to bring the light of the gospel to my heart. I thank You for all those who continue to uphold Your commandments while being emissaries of Your truth. I thank You for the good days that help me heal from the bad ones. I thank You for the hope of eternal life in Your presence.
Amen.
